Enriching the wellbeing of children on and off the mat and well into their future.
My Yoga Playground offers playful and engaging yoga and mindfulness classes for children and families. Based in Sydney, founder Catherine Tong is dedicated to sharing the goodness of yoga in the hope that one day it will be a part of every school, every household, every family and every child’s life.
In 2020 during lockdown, we created the most unique deck of kids yoga cards. Our Rainbow Chakra Yoga and Mindfulness Card Deck was designed to bring playfulness, balance, wellness and peace into the lives of children and families on and off the mat. We also have a magical crystal collection and chakra essential oils to complement the cards. Check out our shop here!
What is Yoga and Why Yoga for Children?
The practice of yoga is more than just making shapes with our bodies. It is the “union” of body, mind and breath. Through postures with our body (asanas), pranayama (breathing) exercises, mindful meditation and relaxation, we unify these elements to cultivate a sense of wellbeing, balance and peace. When we practice yoga, we show care and love towards our body, mind and soul - a gift that once learned, can never be taken away from you. Yoga is for everybody - every age, level, shape, size, background, and it can be practiced anywhere, and everywhere. Yoga is not just a practice on the mat, yoga is a lifestyle off the mat too.
My Yoga Playground specialises in yoga for children because Catherine recognised how important the early years are from her time working in early childhood education. Like adults, children also experience certain levels of stress in their lives. This could range from starting or changing schools, exams, making new friends, moving house, or preparing for a new sibling in the family. Exposing children to yoga from a young age can guide them through such changes and lay the foundations for taking care of their health and living a balanced and happy life.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is being aware of what is happening in your body, mind, and environment without judgement, so that we can experience the present moment wholeheartedly. Children are actually wonderful teachers, and adults can learn a lot from observing children, because they really live in the moment and enjoy the simple things in life. That said, as children are still learning about themselves, a regular mindful practice can help them identify and understand how their emotions manifest in their bodies and minds, and how to respond and make better choices. Simple yet effective mindful tools and techniques, like tuning into body sensations or conscious breathing, are sprinkled throughout each and every My Yoga Playground class.
